Mental health counseling

Confidential talk therapy with a licensed professional counselor for stress, anxiety, low mood, grief, relationships and big life changes.

What it is

Counseling is a space to talk with a trained, licensed professional about what is weighing on you. It can help with stress, worry, low mood, grief, sleep, relationships, work pressure and major changes such as a new baby or a move.

Our counselor does not tell you what to do. Together you work out what you want to change and what small steps can help. Counseling at Alder Health is not crisis care. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

What to expect at the visit

  1. Your first session is an intake. Your counselor asks what brings you in, what you hope for and what support you already have.

  2. You agree on goals and on how often to meet. Many people meet every one to two weeks.

  3. Later sessions are a conversation. Your counselor may suggest skills to try between visits, always with your agreement.

  4. What you say is private. We share it only with your permission, or where the law requires it to keep someone safe.

  5. You can change your plan or stop at any time.

How to prepare

  • There is nothing you need to prepare. It can help to think about what you most want from counseling.
  • Bring your insurance card, and check whether your plan covers counseling.
  • Find a private place if you are on the clinic phone check-in. At the clinic, our quiet room is available before and after your session.
  • If you take medicine for your mood or sleep, bring the names so your counselor knows the whole picture.
  • Arrive five minutes early for the first session to finish a short questionnaire.

Questions about mental health counseling

Is what I say kept private?

Yes. Your counselor keeps what you share confidential. The exceptions are rare: if someone is at serious risk of harm, or where the law requires a report. Your counselor explains this at the first session.

Can your counselor prescribe medicine?

No. Our counselor provides talk therapy only. If medicine might help, your counselor can talk with you and, with your agreement, with your primary care provider.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people find a few sessions are enough. Others meet for several months. You and your counselor review your progress regularly and decide together.

What if I am in crisis?

Counseling visits are not for emergencies. If you are thinking about harming yourself or someone else, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Help is available at any hour.

Prefer to talk to a person?

Our front desk can book, change or cancel an appointment, answer questions about your visit and set up a time with an interpreter.
